Work on the project had begun in the 1980s, but it was not completed for test flights until 1997. After winning the Advanced Tactical Fighter Competition proposed by the USAF, it was officially accepted into service, with introduction by 2005. Characterized by advanced technologies that provide it with excellent maneuverability, radar stealth and the ability to conduct both air and ground operation, the F-22 is a fearsome opponent in any battlefield. Its main task is air superiority, but it can fulfill the task of close air support with an assortment of internal or external ordinance. Additionally, one of the key features of the F-22 is the "supercruise" characteristic - the ability to maintain above the speed of sound without using the fuel thirsty afterburners. The aircraft is also equipped with an advanced avionics system, powerful AN/APG-77 radar, and a unique radar absorbing system, which makes it difficult to detect by the enemy.
