This Limited-Edition Print features WWII fighters and aces whose mission was to eliminate Japanese Commander Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto. “Bogies, 11 o’clock high!”, shouted Lt. Doug Canning, breaking a two-hour radio silence. Maj. John Mitchell had led 16 P-38s of his 339th fighter sqn from Guadalcanal’s Henderson Field to Bougainville on April 18th, 1943 to intercept the Betty bomber carrying Yamamoto. Now, after flying 400 miles at 50’ above water, navigating by pure dead-reckoning, the flight sighted two Betty bombers escorted by 6 Zeros descending toward Ballale Island. Maj. Mitchell and 12 Lightnings climbed to provide high cover while Capt. Tom Lanphier and Lts. Rex Barber, Frank Holmes and Ray Hine -the designated “attack flight” – turned to intercept the bombers. After a long dog fight over the water below, the Betties were eliminated and the Zeros were destroyed. Mitchell called “Mission accomplished!” and 15 lightnings returned. Lt. Ray Hine, last seen skimming over the water with smoke trailing his engine, did not return from the mission and was never found. Print includes signatures by Rex Barber, Besby Holmes, Jack Jacobson, Del Goerke, Doug Canning, Lou Kittel, Larry Graebner, Roger Ames and artists Roy Grinnell’s signature. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity with history behind the art. Print measures 30”w x 24”h.
