Designed as a light-utility helicopter for support of the United States military, the UH-1 “Huey” quickly became a beloved craft for its troops. With widespread production reaching upwards of 16,000 units, the type became prolific in its service, with over 7,000 operating in Vietnam. It demonstrated important multi-purpose attributes as an attack craft, cargo carrier, and medivac chopper all in one package, leading to great success around the globe.

Each Huey could hold up to 3,880 lbs of cargo or personnel, such as a load of troops, stretchers, and medical attendants onboard. The craft was powered by a single Lycoming T-53 turboshaft engine, which provided a top speed of 127mph and maximum range over 300 miles. It could fly up to 12,000 ft in altitude and had a maximum takeoff weight of 9,500 lbs.

Hueys have served in every branch of the US Military and nearly 50 foreign countries since the later 20th century. Many variants of the type have even served in civilian operation for search and rescue and firefighting.
